A home for my Old Soul.

Every now and then it shows, the fact that must have an old soul.  I did a post on it once, click here if you missed it.  This post is the latest concoction of ideas I have swirling around in my head.  This one is for that romantic, nature loving alchemist that lives deep inside of me.  And BTW, thanks for all of the sofa input, it did help.  Enjoy, Heidi

Sofa King Awesome!!!

In all my days of searching and wandering through blogs and magazines, there is one sofa that always tugs at my heart strings, the "Tufted Sofa".  Now my friend Janet tells me not to get the ones with the tufts on the seat part because crumbs, lint and everything else finds it's way in those nooks and crannies.   In order to save some cashola I was going to re-upholster our present sofa, but hubby informed me that after he slept on it for about 5 years, it has some issues, that new fabric could not fix.  On further inspection I agreed since it had the impression of a stocky shaped man, about 260 lbs. lying on his side, indented permanently in it.  I took off the cushions and the shape continued into the springs and what ever else is under the fabric.  Now, I know what you all are thinking, my husband must have been in the doghouse for a total of 5 years.  Well, a small percentage of that is true, but more like the combination of having a baby sleeping in your bed and  having sleep apnea.  Needless to say, we are in the market for a new sofa and I have chosen a winner.  Now I need to choose a fabric.  Please chime in and tell me what you think.  I have a husband and a son that pretty much live on it so I am leaning towards leather, but then there is the side of me that wants a pretty linen or velvet one.  Comments Please.  Heidi

Clever Gambrel

Another lovely home by Steven Gambrel. Imagine sitting there on the water's edge like that. So gorgeous.

Neutral and Natural

I like to call this look "Monochromagic".  There is no color, only white, black, wood, glass, metal, grey, wicker, silver, stone, linen and plants.  It is always a perfect combination that has a timeless look, since colors can be trendy.
I still have some issues with avocado green and burnt orange since I grew up in the 70's.
Enjoy, Heidi

My Life Right Now

My life has been pretty hectic with the arrival of little Max. The life I knew which was that of a working woman with one child, a husband and 2 dogs has changed. I used to purchase my favourite magazines and be able to sit down on the sofa and read them that night. I used to have time to do my own thing. But not these days.

I have had the new Country Style magazine sitting on my bedside table now for a few days and I haven't even had the chance to open it.

I actually glanced at my bedside table tonight and thought I would take a photo of it to show you.

It consists of the Country Style magazine which I am dying to open. It also consists of that pink fabric which, even though I had ordered the yellow colourway on Friday, I changed it today to the pink. I don't usually change my mind once I've made my mind up - what is happening to me? It also consists of a book I purchased on Amazon which I think is very applicable to my life right now - Just Let Me Lie Down Necessary Terms for the Half-Insane Working Mom by Kristin van Ogtrop. I also love the colour of it's cover. Today Harry made me the origami swans which you can see sitting there. I love them. Brad and Harry brought me in a bowl of Harry's favourite treat - ice-cream with coke bottle lollies on top just now to try to cheer me up. It worked.

I'm sure tomorrow will be better. Tomorrow our container full to the brim of Stuart Membery furniture will be arriving on our doorstep. Tomorrow is going to be a very exciting day.

The Bathroom Chronicles -or Wallpaper Whining

Ugh!    Yuck !    Pew!    Ack!
That's all I've got to say about that!
That being wallpaper removal.

And not just any wallpaper, but this lovely stuff.

I've been slowly, and I mean slooowwwly, trying my best to remove the ohsobeautiful wallpaper I inherited here in the rooms I inhabit.
(There are 5 rooms I'm currently removing the paper from, by the way. I'll be having a pity party fairly soon, and you'll all be invited.)

Seriously, was this pattern ever popular?

Well, it's not for me, that's all I can say.

Anyhoo, I have grand plans for this bathroom.

Can I just tell you - I HATE removing wallpaper.
And I also hate it when builders feel it isn't necessary to prime the walls before putting the paper up.

You know what happens when the walls aren't prepped properly, don't you?
That's right - you must resign yourself to the fact that drywall patching will be in your very near future.
&*!*#^$$**$!#*%$(!!
(Sorry, but I had to get that out of my system before I could move on!)

So, today I've been ripping that wallpaper out.
And before you think I've got so far in one day, let me clarify by saying that it's taken me weeks to get to this point.

I thought I'd just leave it until I had time to do it all at once, but I'm sure you'll understand when I tell you that I just couldn't make myself keep looking at that every day.
So what did I do? I tore off the top layer (thank the lord it was strippable), and I stared at the yellow backing for several more weeks!

I thought that since every time I went in that bathroom, I was doing this.............. ripping off bits of paper a little at a time......

That I may as well take the rest of it off. So I did.
And now I'm removing all of that yellow liner.

I've torn some degree of wallpaper out of all 5 of the rooms just to see how much trouble it was going to be. I can assure you that in this room in particualr, the wallpaper hanger used at least 15 extra gallons of glue. I know this for a fact because I am currently stuck to the wall.

So just to show you that I am really working hard today, I've gone from this:

To this:

And now I must peel myself off the wall and get back to the other side of the bathroom:

I'm gettin' there....
(do not adujt your color -that is the ugly yellow backing paper soaked in stripper)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TIP: Now, for those of you with wallpaper stripping in your future, here's a great homemade solution I discovered purely out of frustration. I tried EVERY solution I found in the stores and on the internet. Nothing seemed to be the right thing for these walls, so I came up with my own remedy that seems to be working great to remove all that glue gunk.
(If you've already removed some paper and still have glue buil-up in the wall, this also works for that.)
Mixture:
1 gallon of water
1 teaspoon of Dawn dish detergent
1/4 cup of Goo Gone (or any brand of adhesive remover)
A Chemical Sprayer
Be sure to mix with warm water. It'll help to pull the glue off the walls better.
You can get a chemical sprayer at Walmart or Big Lots for about $10, and it's well worth it.
Put it in a gallon jug and shake it well.
Then pour that into the sprayer.
Turn off the breaker to the room, cover your switches and outlets, and then spray the walls really good.
IMPORTANT:
Let it sit and work for about 15-20 minutes so that it has time to loosen the glue from the wall.
If it has dried when you are ready to remove it, simply spray it again with a light coat of the mixture.
Scrape the paper off with a flat blade or an old credit card.
*Score the top layer first so that the solution can get below the top surface.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well, it's back to work for me!

What easy solutions have you come up with to remove wallpaper?

Friday Flowers

It's been a while since I have posted some Friday Flowers. Mum arranged this foliage for me last weekend and in amongst our lovely old garden we found a passion fruit vine so we picked some and plonked them in another vase as above. I'm planning on a quiet weekend pottering around the new house. Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Absolutely In Love With...

I am always on the hunt for new, exciting, beautiful fabrics as fabric is my starting point for the rooms/homes I design. We have just received some absolutely beautiful new fabrics in and I must admit I am completely smitten with this orchid fabric. My favourite colourway is this one above but it doesn't work with my current wall colour at the new house. As painting the house {which is going to be a mamouth cost} is not yet on the agenda I am going to have to work with the existing colours which are all very heritage!! So I am going to cover a couple of old chairs I have in the yellow colourway which you can see peeping through underneath...it's very beautiful too but that pink is just to die for, don't you think?!!

For the Laundry Goddess in all of us.

This one has got to be my favorite.  I love how you are allowed to gaze outside while folding clothes, all of a sudden laundry does not feel like such a chore since usually it is done stuffed in a dungeon or coffin, I mean closet somewhere.  Click here and let Monica from Hirondelle Rustique show you how to make your own laundry detergent. ( 40 loads for $1.09)
Found on the Designer's Attic
Love the how the counter top is a folding area.  My BFF Janet had a cute curtain that could be pulled across both the washer and dryer to hide them.  Then she would use this space as an extra serving station when entertaining.  Clever girl, that Janet.

This one is pulling double duty and laundry and gift wrapping zone.
Make it fun while your at it.
